Because
of the foot and mouth epidemic that struck Europe during the late
winter of 2001, early spring flowers appeared here for the first time in
years. Den Bleik, a laundry service during the earlier century used hydro
power from the Aa river nearby and dried linen in these open grasslands,
causing it to bleach in the sun hence the name.
