(1) The lime quarry at Robben Island 1997

40 x 50 cm

Lime was used to surface the roads on Robben Island as well as on wealthy estates in the Cape and Western Provinces. This lime quarry, dug by hand, gave prisoners a chance to communicate with each other. Table mountain looms across the bay in Cape Town, covered on this occasion by a misty "tablecloth" Visiting here in 1997 was memorable for me. As flora, diverse and colourful, rehabilitated this colonial crime scene, I was struck by the absolute defeat of an evil empire. Highly prised small format canvas.
