Some concluding remarks:

Paul Cezanne French 1839 - 1906

" Design and colour are not destinct and separate. As one paints, one draws.

The more the colours harmonize, the more the design takes form. When colour is at it's richest, form is at its fullest."

Jean - Baptiste - Simeon Chardin French 1699 - 1779

" One can define the shape of every object in nature by showing the precise colour tones of everything that surrounds it...

Nature is not to be rendered with the colours one buys from a merchant, but by accurately imitating its...

colours in relation to space and the light that illuminates it."

Henri Matisse French 1869 - 1954

" Colour above all, and perhaps even more than drawing, is a means of liberation.

Liberation is the freeing of conventions, old methods being pushed aside by the contributions of the new generation.." 1945

Vincent van Gogh Dutch 1853 - 1890

" The last study I have done is a view of the village, where they were at work

- under some enormous plane trees - repairing the pavements.

So there are heaps of sand, stones, and the gigantic trunks - the leaves yellowing and here

and there you might get a glimpse of a house front and small figures."

Letter to brother Theo December 7, 1889 ( The road menders - oil on canvas, 1889 )

" I am beginning to feel that I am quite a different creature from what I was when I came here.

I have no doubts, no hesitation in attacking things...But what a country!...I am so happy in the house and in my work..."

Letter to brother Theo, September 17, 1888

Claude Monet French 1840 - 1926

When you go out to paint, try to forget what objects you have before you - a tree, house, a field....Merely think,

" Here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you,

the exact colour and shape, until it gives your own naive impression of the scene before you."

Odilon Redon French 1840 - 1916

" While I recognize the necessity for a basis of observed reality...true art lies in a reality that is felt"

Ferdinand-Victor-Eugene Delacroix French 1798 - 1863

" I did not begin to do anything passable in my African journey

until the moment when I had sufficiently forgotten the small details so as to recall in my paintings

only the striking and poetical aspects."

Jean - Baptiste - Camille Corot French 1796 - 1875

"Never lose the first impression which has moved you."

Paul Gauguin French 1848 - 1903

" Do not paint too much after nature. Art is an abstraction...

Extract it from nature while dreaming in front of it and think more of the creation which will be the result."

George Braque French 1882 - 1963

" The starting point of a picture for any painter is a matter of colours and form...

I believe that the poetry of art - if that is what one may call it - is a matter of animating these forms and colours."

Wassily Kandinsky Russian 1866 - 1944

"...Colour directly influences the soul. Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings.

The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another...to cause vibrations in the soul."

Pablo Picasso Spanish 1882 - 1973

" ...blue is above all, a physical matter - a return to the self - to life as it is."
